Heather and Michelle Nunnelly bitch about their art frustrations. Again.

That’s followed by a conversation about Grand Theft Auto V. We briefly mention the controversy over Carolyn Petit’s critique of the video game, and how people overreacted to her commentary. We also talk about how GTA Online should be the future of the video game series since it’s best fit for that format.

Because of VACANT‘s long hiatus, Michelle and Heather Nunnelly only speak briefly about their artistic frustrations. Then they go straight off to talking about Rain, Once Upon a Time, and Doctor Who.

They both think the indie-style video game Rain is very beautiful but a little too easy. Its repetitive storytelling and gameplay don’t help a lot with that.

However, as simple as Rain seems, Once Upon A Time is a lot more boring. They complain about how the series starts off strong with unique ideas but quickly becomes a show with no substance. Also, they mention Doctor Who a couple times.

Michelle and Heather Nunnelly talk about their time at SPX.

They give shoutouts to Alex and Kyle for being the first two readers of VACANT to talk to Heather at a con. They also give a shoutout to Lira who spoke with them the year before. Other than that they met great people, sold comics, bought comics, and only had one awkward encounter.

Heather and Michelle Nunnelly are back from the Audioshocker’s hiatus to talk aboutVACANT‘s hiatus. The webcomic will be on break until December 2013 due to stress and exhaustion.

After that, The World’s End gets a rare thumbs-up from the two. Michelle and Heather typically complain about every movie they see, but this comedy received no complaints. They highly recommend watching it.

They also talk about Indie Game: The Movie and how game development parallels the creative process in other mediums like comic books. All of the creators profiled in the documentary represent the everyday artist and the artist’s struggle.

The film shows what it’s like to work on a single project for a long period of time, providing insight on how this affects the creators as they assume the immense pressure that comes along with conquering their dreams.

(Heather and Michelle apologize if it seems like they’re giving the game developers a hard time on this podcast. Every artist has probably been in the position these creators have been in.)

All of the games in the documentary are beautiful and worth playing. These games are: Braid, Super Meat Boy, and FEZ.

Michelle and Heather go over Sherlock, the British TV show, and how it’s ridiculously awesome. They talk about the iffy storytelling in Season 1, and how it’s quickly fixed in Season 2.

A section is dedicated to the infamous Irene Adler, and how she rubbed Heather and Michelle the wrong way in both Sherlock, and the American film, Sherlock Holmes. Why was Irene unsettling and why is she no help to the feminist movement?

PART 2:

They then, in part 2, do a compare and contrast between Sherlock Homes: A Game Of Shadows, and Sherlock. Obviously Sherlock gets most of the compliments since neither of them were fans of the American adaptions of the book in the first place. Homosexuality and “Noisy” storytelling are two topics that they speak about in detail.

Heather Nunnelly begins with a recap of the VACANT webcomics update! Also, learn about a VACANT figurine that almost happened.

Hayze gets a last name and Shadoweyes makes a guest appearance.

Next up, Michelle Nunnelly enjoys the Attack on Titan anime but that’s because she tries not to sweat the small stuff. Still, she can’t help but complain about Eren yelling too much (and she wants more Mikasa!).

Heather agrees… the characters need to shut the hell up.

A discussion about Neon Genesis Evangelion transitions into a chat about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Villains Micro-Series – Alopex #4 (an issue where Heather did flats and color assists!).

Ross Campbell uses basic color to great effect in the Alopex issue.

Finally, Michelle and Heather have been playing Shadowrun Returns, a Kickstarter-funded indie game. And they like it.

Heather and Michelle Nunnelly forgot to talk about VACANT‘s last update during thelast podcast, so they go over it in this one. After that they say thanks to all those who supported VACANT’s Kickstarter and submitted guest art.

Their topic this week is: Should children read mature comics? How does it influence their behavior? Chobits and Love Hina are the two comics Michelle and Heather read when they were young, and they talk about how that impacted their lives.

Michelle reads dialogue from Bakuman wondering if the author himself is sexist or if the characters are intentionally written that way. They discuss how the portrayal in some manga may send a negative message to young readers, especially those who are not mature enough to filter it out.

Last, they give a quick, positive review of The Heat starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. Both of them recommend it if you want a good laugh.

Heather and Michelle Nunnelly start off with a reminder about the VACANT Kickstarter campaign. It’s close to ending but it’s still going… SO PLEDGE NOW! Heather explains the ID card and dog tags incentives for the campaign, and talks a bit about the latest VACANT discussion on Amilova.

Next up, Michelle and Heather ponder the unintentional-but-uncomfortable sexism in Two Best Friends Play. That leads to a conversation about “bad” art and if creators are aware of what they’re doing when they make it.

Then they review Monsters University. Both Michelle and Heather feel that the characters are too stereotyped. Forced into cliché cliques, it’s totally unrealistic that the characters would face this situation as college students.

Finally, they review The Last of Us, a new survival-action game from Naughty Dog, the makers of Uncharted. While they both enjoyed the game, they feel that the developer played it too safe. They finish off the review by comparing it to Jake’s storyline from Resident Evil 6, which isn’t perfect but really fun.

Heather and Michelle Nunnelly talk about VACANT’s Kickstarter that just launched to print a Vol. 1 graphic novel. Then they talk about the heated debate on the ending of Issue 4 of the series.

After a quick review of Warm Bodies, Heather and Michelle do a compare and contrast between Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek Into Darkness. They go into which one they feel was better made and which one was a flop.

Last, they review Man of Steel. Heather disliked the movie, but Michelle liked it. This is the first time they’ve ever disagreed on a movie. They discuss their opinions.

But even though they have different opinions about the new Superman film, they both thought Faora-Ul kicked ass.

Heather and Michelle Nunnelly start off by talking about a couple storytelling techniques used in the VACANT webcomic. One in involves the “set up and pay off” style movie scriptwriters often use. The other involves Vacant’s prologue, which you can see as a trailer.

Then they go over the good bad girl trope. Examples of good bad girls includeCatwoman and Black Widow. They compare these characters to their male counterpart, the bad boy.

After that they tear apart Star Trek Into Darkness (with SPOILERS!) for its weak female characters and lame ass ending.
